The Northern Virginia Chamber Partnership invites all members and guests to breakfast where you will learn about the policies for this Governor and how the makeup of the closely divided General Assembly will affect your business over the next two years.
Dr. Stephen Farnsworth, Professor and Director, Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington will discuss:
- What business-related activities, both pro and con, you can expect from the current administration for the next two years;
- The business impact from a General Assembly that is only two votes from shifting parties; and
- With Speaker Kirk Cox and Minority Leader Eileen Filler-Corn (invited),
- What bills passed will impact the business community; and
- How the 51/49 paradigm is working in the House.
About the Speakers:
Stephen J. Farnsworth, PH.D.
Dr. Farnsworth is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs and Director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington. He is the author or co-author of six books, as well as scholarly articles on the presidency, the mass media, U.S, public opinion and Virginia politics, and is a 2017 recipient of the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. His political commentary has appeared in a wide range of media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, PBS NewsHour, Politico, C-SPAN and BBC World.
Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox
On January 10, 2018, Kirk Cox was unanimously elected as Speaker by the House of Delegates. Upon being sworn in, Kirk became the first Speaker in state history from Colonial Heights, the first Speaker to represent a portion of Chesterfield County since the 1800s, and the first Speaker whose profession was that of a public school teacher. Prior to serving as Speaker, Kirk served as Majority Leader from 2010-2018, and Majority Whip before that.
In addition to his role as Speaker, Kirk serves as Chairman in of the House Rules Committee and is a member of the Joint Legislative Audit, and Review Commission (JLARC). Kirk is a former Chair of the Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources (ACNR) Committee and a former Vice-Chair of the House Appropriations Committee.
Virginia House of Delegates Minority Leader Eileen Filler-Corn (invited)
Eileen Filler-Corn is the Minority Leader of the House of Delegates and has served as a delegate, representing the 41st District, since 2010. The 41st District, located in Fairfax County, includes Burke and parts of Fairfax, Fairfax Station and West Springfield. Eileen has over two decades of experience in both the public and private sectors, working across party lines to make a difference in the lives of all Virginians.
In the House of Delegates, Eileen is a member of the Transportation Committee, Finance Committee, and the Commerce & Labor Committee. She currently serves on the Joint Commission on Transportation Accountability, Health Insurance Reform Commission, Joint Commission of Technology and Science, Virginia Commission on Intergovernmental Cooperation and the Transportation Public-Private Partnership Steering Committee.
